Korean webtoons

Korean webtoons are getting worldwide audiences.

South Korea is solidifying its position as webtoon capital of the world as creators are now integrating power of artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its flourishing ecosystem. Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in conjunction with the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), recently unveiled the findings of the ‘2023 Webtoon Survey,’ shedding light on the industry’s exponential growth and innovative future.

The survey revealed staggering figures, indicating a remarkable 16.8% surge in total sales within the domestic webtoon industry, amounting to KRW 1.829 trillion in 2022 alone. This growth trajectory has been consistent since 2018, marking Korea as a pivotal player in the global webtoon market.

Forecasts by Allied Market Research project an astronomical rise in the global webtoon market from $3.7 billion in 2021 to a staggering $56.1 billion by 2030. With Korea’s webtoons gaining significant traction globally, industry experts anticipate sustained domestic growth, propelled by cutting-edge AI integration.

AI technologies promise to not only enhance production efficiency but also to augment intellectual property (IP) value creation within the webtoon realm. Major players like Naver and Kakao are leading the charge, investing in AI-driven tools ranging from creative assistance and animation to predictive analytics for webtoon success.

Naver Webtoon, a frontrunner in this innovation wave, has unveiled ‘Webtoon AI Painter,’ a pioneering automatic coloring service streamlining the arduous manual coloring process. Additionally, their development pipeline includes a ‘webtoon AI editor’ capable of character extraction from images and an AI tool designed to mimic artists’ painting styles.

The overarching vision of Naver Webtoon is to democratize webtoon creation, empowering anyone with the ability to craft compelling narratives from mere ideas. Augmenting the reader experience, Naver has also introduced ‘Toon Filter,’ a service seamlessly transforming selfies into whimsical webtoon drawings.

Kakao Entertainment, not to be outdone, is ramping up efforts to infuse AI into its webtoon repertoire, aiming to forge deeper connections between creators and readers. By leveraging AI technologies, Kakao Entertainment seeks to redefine the webtoon landscape, offering novel experiences to readers while amplifying value for creators.

With Korea’s webtoon industry poised at the vanguard of innovation, the fusion of AI promises to reshape storytelling paradigms, propelling Korean webtoons to even greater heights on the global stage. As the symbiotic relationship between technology and creativity flourishes, the future of webtoons appears boundless, offering boundless opportunities for creators and enthusiasts alike.
