Kakao is enhancing its AI capabilities by implementing an individual independent system for Kakao Brain. In addition to constructing a super-large AI model, Kakao is actively engaged in the development of vertical services that leverage AI technology.
Kakao Brain revealed that during the interim shareholders’ meeting held on June 9th, they appointed Kim Byung-hak, the AI TF leader at Kakao, as the newly designated independent representative. Kakao Brain is undergoing a transition to an independent representative system, replacing the previous dual representative structure consisting of Kim Il-doo, the former CEO, and the newly appointed Kim Byung-hak, as independent representatives.
Kim Byung-hak, the newly appointed CEO, has been involved with Kakao since 2013, starting as the team leader of the Applied Analysis TF, Search Team, and Recommendation Team. In 2017, he took on the role of Head of Kakao’s AI Division. Subsequently, he has held positions such as Senior Vice President of Kakao Enterprise, Chief Product Officer at DeepBio, and Non-executive Director at Base Investment. From April onwards, he has been leading the newly launched AI TF at Kakao, responsible for identifying and addressing AI-related issues throughout the company.
According to officials, Kakao Brain will continue to be led by CEO Kim Il-doo in its global advanced research and super-large AI model construction projects. Meanwhile, in the area of multimodal language models, the newly appointed CEO Kim Byung-hak will lead the exploration of vertical services utilizing appropriate technologies and the fine-tuning of existing AI models. This consolidation of AI capabilities under Kakao Brain reflects the company’s strategic focus, as stated by the officials.
Kim Byung-hak, the CEO, stated, “I aim to enhance Kakao Brain’s vertical service capabilities and create new models that have not existed before, striving to establish ourselves as one of the major players in the diversified global AI market.”
CEO Kim Il-doo mentioned, “Since 2017, Kakao Brain has been conducting advanced AI research to strengthen Kakao’s AI capabilities. Together with the newly appointed CEO Kim Byung-hak, we will continue to explore the direction for the development of Kakao Brain.”
Kakao Brain, under the independent representative system, aims to solidify its position as a leading global company specializing in multimodal generative AI. It plans to strengthen two areas: the construction of large-scale foundational models and the exploration of vertical service markets by utilizing appropriate technologies.
