Riiid acquires Qualson

In a strategic move to fortify its position in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-driven education technology, Seoul-based startup Riiid Inc. has announced the acquisition of Qualson Co Ltd., a prominent English language learning and content provider headquartered in South Korea. Backed by the Softbank Vision Fund, Riiid is set to expand its footprint in the English-as-a-second-language (“ESL”) market with this transformative deal.

Qualson’s Rich Portfolio and Innovative Approach

Established in 2012, Qualson has made a name for itself with a a diverse portfolio of language learning brands, most notably its flagship product, Real Class™. This innovative platform distinguishes itself by leveraging high-quality content sourced from international media giants such as Warner Media and NBC Universal to impart real-world, conversational English skills.

Real Class is widely recognized for its engaging lessons, featuring collaboration with well-known public personalities in South Korea and utilizing content derived from Hollywood movies and TV shows. Qualson’s CEO, Sooyoung Park, has been instrumental in the success of the company and will play a pivotal role in the combined business, bringing a wealth of experience and industry ‘know-how’ to the table.

Synergies and Growth Prospects

The acquisition opens up exciting possibilities for Riiid to enhance Qualson’s offerings by integrating its globally-renowned “knowledge tracing” and “content recommendation” AI technologies. This infusion of cutting-edge AI capabilities is expected to elevate the user experience on platforms like Real Class, providing more personalized and effective learning opportunities for ESL enthusiasts.

On the flip side, Qualson’s premium content and dedicated user base present Riiid with an opportunity to expedite the development of its future ESL products. With a focus on practical, daily English learning lessons and live classes, Qualson’s products align well with Riiid’s mission to revolutionize education through AI.

Strategic Outlook and CEO Insights

Founded in 2014, Riiid Inc. has been at the forefront of AI-driven education technology. The company operates several products, including its flagship Santa TOEIC™ app, catering to students in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The acquisition of Qualson is poised to strengthen Riiid’s position as a leader in the ESL market, with a keen eye on delivering
innovative and effective language learning solutions.

Commenting on the acquisition, Sooyoung Park, CEO of Qualson, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Joining forces with Riiid marks an exciting chapter for Qualson. The synergies between our high-quality content and Riiid’s advanced AI technologies will undoubtedly redefine the ESL learning experience.”

The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2024, pending customary closing conditions. This landmark move is set to reshape the landscape of AI-driven education technology, with Riiid and Qualson joining forces to unlock new potentials in the ESL market.
