Korean startup MADDE, specializing in three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has successfully secured pre-Series A investment totaling 2.6 billion won ($1.9 million). This investment milestone comes shortly after MADDE’s spin-off from Hyundai Motor Group in August. DSC Investment, Schmidt, Etri Holdings and Hyundai Motor Group participated in this significant funding.
MADDE’s core innovation lies in its manufacturing technology for silicon carbide (SiC)-based parts utilizing 3D printers. Silicon carbide is a pivotal material for next-generation power semiconductors, renowned for its resilience in high-temperature and high-voltage conditions, as well as its energy efficiency compared to silicon (Si). Silicon carbide, akin to diamond in hardness, necessitates intricate production techniques. In contrast, using 3D printers, an additive manufacturing technology, to produce silicon carbide-based components simplifies the process, substantially reduces production time and costs, and enables the creation of intricate designs.
MADDE’s strategic focus is on the semiconductor parts market, a pioneering industry. The recent investment will be allocated towards the enhancement of 3D printing equipment, research and development (R&D) initiatives, and facility expansion. A 170 Pyeong production plant is scheduled for construction next month near Ttukseom, Seoul. In the future, MADDE plans to expand into the aerospace and nuclear sectors. This expansion entails the utilization of 3D printing to create various silicon carbide-based components, including rocket engine nozzle extensions, satellite mirrors, and nuclear fuel powder containers for small nuclear reactors. The optimization design for printing these components has already been completed.
Cho Shin-hoo, CEO of MADDE, emphasized, “Through this investment, we will establish a silicon carbide 3D printing pilot line. We are committed to advancing the domestic manufacturing industry through the continuous development of additive manufacturing technology.”
