Korean startup Becon has developed scalp scanner that can be used at home.

Hair loss because of scalp conditions is a common problem among many men and women. But to diagnose the scalp problem and manage it can be expensive and time-consuming as it may require visits to specialized hair clinics and dermatologists or trichologists. But what if the diagnostic product is available at home?

Korean startup Becon, a spin of Samsung C-Lab, has developed a handheld device and app that can easily analyze scalp health conditions at home. The ICT healthcare home care management is especially useful in times of ‘untact’ solutions.

Efficient scalp scanner

With Becon, anyone can easily diagnose the scalp condition at home, choose and use a solution that suits their scalp. The Becon hand-held device and app analyzes ten different elements of scalp health that include hair density, follicle count, hair texture, scalp sensitivity, temperature, moisture and scent, and other factors.

Becon’s scanner uses a camera with 80X magnification, a CMOS sensor and a machine leaning-based algorithm to analyze the scalp, before recommending a solution that is tailored to the user’s unique condition. Once the user’s scalp has been analyzed, an AI algorithm selects from a list of more than 60 ingredients to design a customized shampoo that best fits the user’s scalp assessment. As time goes on, Becon collects data to deliver a diagnostic report illustrating the progress that has been made regarding the user’s condition.

When the CEO of Becon Minsuk Park also faced the problem of hair loss and scalp issues for over a decade, he came with the idea to develop professional-level scalp care for use at home. Park founded Becon Co., Ltd. through C-Lab, an in-house venture training program at Samsung Electronics.

Becon’s technology is based on IoT diagnostic device and deep learning and machine learning algorithm. “We want to keep improving our scalp diagnostic algorithm to provide accurate information to as many people as possible,” a Becon member commented on the Samsung C-Lab platform, “As our goal is to enter the global market, we’re currently working on building a database of hair products from all over the world.” The startup also has a community for those who want to share their hair concerns.
