Korean startup Riiid's $100K challenge details.

Korean startup Riiid, a leading AI education solutions company, has successfully attracted more than 2700 teams to participate in its inaugural global Artificial Intelligence Education (AIEd) Challenge. The challenge, created to accelerate innovation in education by building a better and more equitable learning model for students worldwide, was launched on October 5 via Google’s Kaggle competition platform. Just 1.5 months after announcing the contest, more than 2000 teams have joined, with one in six of the world’s 196 Kaggle Grandmasters taking part. There are five levels of expertise in Kaggle, ranging from Novice to Grandmaster, depending on past performance.

“The large volume of participating teams for the Riiid AIEd Challenge signifies a high level of interest for actualizing greater equity in learning and education among AI researchers and scientists around the world,” said Jim Larimore, Chief Officer for Equity in Learning and Challenge Chair. “We are hopeful that the highly competitive challenge translates into designing a new paradigm for education in the post-COVID era, paving the way for democratizing quality education for all students anywhere in the world.”

Kaggle’s first education-related AI challenge in nearly a decade involves the world’s largest-ever public dataset of student-AI interactions out of the dozens of Kaggle competitions conducted annually (under the auspices of its owner, Google). This treasure trove of data, and the promise of improving education for students around the world, has attracted more than 2,700 competing teams, including some of the world’s top AI researchers. Thirty-two, or 16 percent, of the world’s 196 Grandmasters are participating, well above the average of about five percent for other challenges.

By comparison, the 10 other fixed Kaggle competitions being held concurrently on average drew only 480 participating teams. Riiid’s gamble that releasing its proprietary dataset (an order of magnitude larger than any other similar one) would draw the world’s best and brightest researchers to its Kaggle competition paid off. “We’re delighted to be the fifth most popular Kaggle competition of 2020 since the results promise to dramatically influence and improve the power of our AI education platform that has already bettered the lives (and scores) of millions of students around the world, delivering a more personalized education experience to all, “said YJ Jang, Riiid’s co-founder and CEO.

The goal of the challenge is to create algorithms for “Knowledge Tracing,” the modeling of student knowledge over time using the world’s largest hierarchical education dataset — EdNet, comprised of more than 130 million interactions between more than 780,000 students from Riiid’s AI tutor solution.

The Riiid AIEd Challenge, launched October 5, will run until January 7, 2021. Winning models will be presented at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence conference AAAI 2021 in February. The Riiid AIEd Challenge partners include Ad Astra, ATP, Dxtera, Edmentum, Kaplan, Reboot Representation, SocialTech.ai, and others. To learn more, visit www.ednetchallenge.ai
