Yonsei University, a prestigious institution in South Korea, recently hosted an empowering entrepreneurship course in collaboration with beSUCCESS Media Group. The program, which ran from June 27 to July 14, 2023, attracted investors, mentors, and esteemed experts from the startup world who shared their valuable knowledge with eager students.
Ranked 73rd globally in the QS World University Rankings 2023, Yonsei University welcomed students from various faculties, including business management, computer science, fine art, and English literature. The main objective of the summer course was to introduce participants to the vibrant world of entrepreneurship and provide them with insights into the ever-evolving global startup trends.
Insights into Africa’s Thriving Startup Ecosystem
On July 5 and 7, Dr. Dotun Olowoporoku, Deputy Director of Novastar Ventures, took center stage to introduce the students to Africa’s burgeoning startup ecosystem. With a remarkable career spanning various sectors, Dr. Olowoporoku has actively supported and invested in companies that address critical challenges in Africa’s low-income mass markets.
Before joining Novastar, Dr. Olowoporoku held a prominent position as the managing partner at Starta, a startup consulting firm dedicated to aiding high-growth companies in Africa. His journey began as a researcher focusing on air quality and climate change in Bristol, England, and his passion for entrepreneurship and innovation propelled him to become one of the region’s 42 most influential entrepreneurs. Holding a Ph.D. in Environmental Management, Dr. Olowoporoku has also made his mark as the host of the Building the Future podcast, where he engages in one-on-one conversations with Africa’s entrepreneurs, thinkers, and innovators, telling the compelling story of the continent’s growth.
Africa’s High-Interest Startup Regions
During his mentorship session, titled ‘Africa Startup Ecosystem and Investment Landscape,’ Dr. Olowoporoku shared his vast experience in the startup world.
He covered critical factors driving Africa’s thriving startup ecosystem, presented an overview of the investment trends in 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, and delved into the exciting realm of the FinTech sector.
Dr. Olowoporoku’s insights revealed that despite the global challenges in 2022, Africa’s startup funding remained resilient, increasing by 8% year-on-year to reach an impressive 6.5 billion USD. Moreover, the first quarter of 2023 saw startups in Africa raise 856.9 million USD in funding, making it the best quarter since Q2 2022. He explained how countries like Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana received the most attention from investors.
Highlighting some key trends, Dr. Olowoporoku emphasized the rise of fintech, which received a remarkable 69% of the total funding raised by startups in Q1 2023. Additionally, he touched on the expansion of African startups across the continent and investors’ growing interest in Francophone Africa’s tech ecosystem.

His ability to provide concrete examples and practical advice offered the students a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the African startup scene.
