Food wastage is one of the biggest problems that commercial kitchens worldwide face. According to an estimate, at least 1/3rd of food items are thrown away by commercial kitchens, increasing operational costs. Korean startup Nuvi Lab attempts to help reduce food waste through its photographic food analysis technology that can measure and provide nutritional information of food matter and gather consumption data.

Nuvi Lab’s solution compares and analyzes food images before and after meals based on camera sensors and uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to determine the type and amount of food eaten and leftovers. The recording and analysis of the actual food intake, which has an accuracy of more than 95% within 1 second, makes it possible to reduce food waste and the expense of food materials.

Saves expenses & increases meal satisfaction

Nuvi Lab’s solution saves expenses, increases meal satisfaction, and analyses eating habits. Nuvi Lab’s solution can be used by restaurants, commercial kitchens and even individuals. Restaurants can get reports about the cost of food wastes, the number of actual servings and leftovers and customer preferences through the mobile application. Individual users can get the reports about eating habits analyzed by AI, such as calories, nutrition balance and eating speed.

Nuvi Lab’s solution primarily targets group cafeterias such as schools, government offices, military bases, and corporations. As social interest in ESG increases, the solution has already been applied to 22 foodservice establishments across South Korea to reduce food waste and they are receiving attention from global companies in oversea countries.

Nuvi Lab’s co-founders, including CEO Kim Dae-hoon, were in charge of advanced R&D, such as image AI analysis and camera sensors at Hyundai Motor Company. Nuvi Lab’s vision is to become the best food waste reduction solution company globally and provide healthcare solutions based on eating habits data. The company has won many domestic awards and was also conferred CES 2021 Innovation Award for Healthcare & Sustainability.
