Kakao Entertainment’s music platform, Melon, has entered into a contract with Luminate, the data company responsible for providing music data to Billboard, and will provide Melon’s music streaming data to be counted for the US Billboard charts.
Melon’s data provides music streaming and data to be downloaded for three charts: the digital-based chart in the Korean region called “South Korea Songs,” the global chart that aggregates data from over 200 different countries including the United States called “Billboard Global 200,” and the global chart excluding the United States called “Billboard Global Excl. US.”
To accurately reflect the Korean music market, which is the seventh largest in the world, Billboard, as it advances into the global market, collaborated with Melon for several months to undergo rigorous data verification and review processes.
Park Doo-wan, the head of the Melon Strategy Division at Kakao Entertainment, said, “Melon, has been leading the growth of the domestic music industry for over 20 years, and our company is delighted to introduce K-Pop, and its artists to the world through data. In the future, Melon plans to enhance the value of music through collaboration with various domestic and international partners.”
Meanwhile, with the global craze for K-Pop, there has been an increasing number of cases where songs by Korean artists such as PSY, BTS, and Twice have made the Billboard charts.
