Did you know that when you order your favourite coffee – whether Espresso, Drip, or the one made in French Press – from one of the town’s numerable cafes, there is a huge wastage of coffee beans? It happens because of the grinders that don’t have efficient coercing power. In an estimate, employing the existing brewing technology, coffee shops lose 1.5 lb of coffee per day, which equates to $7,300 in Annual Losses, or $42,120 retail price loss for the US specialty coffee sector alone. A solution to a perfect cup of coffee is an excellent grinding system.
Korean startup Wave Prism has developed an efficient grinding filter covering all coffee equipment needs, whether coarse, medium, or fine. Its micro filters work to grind coffee beans optimally so that there is reduced loss of beans and more cups of coffee with the same amount of beans. To achieve good quality for coffee, the particles’ size should be matched in a way that balances the brewing time, exposed particle surface area, and the water flow. The grind quality depends on factors such as the grinder high-performance, the Barista’s skills, and the quality of the coffee beans.
Less brewing time and make more cups of coffee
Wave Prism’s technology has been designed to resolve problems of fine filtering. It filters to get target particle size to ensure consistent quality and minimize coffee wastage. The technology works for different types of coffee like Espresso, Drip or French Press that require different particle Sizes and brewing times to achieve the optimal rate of extraction for good taste. The Wave Prism product can make ground coffee beans from 300 to 1500 μm.
Wave Prism has options of both fixed filters at the bottom of the machine and internal, replaceable filters. The auto digital control filters the filing machine without any hassle. Wave Prism’s filters also help reduce the time to make coffees. It makes Cold brew coffee and iced tea in just 10 minutes over the 30 minutes time. This saves a lot of time for the Barista to serve more cups of coffee per day.
Targeting Cafes & Manufacturers
The coffee shop market in Korea is quite big, and Wave Prism’s technology is set to revolutionize the grinding system. According to a data, there are about 83,692 coffee stores in Korea. The company’s vision is to serve their technology to all coffee stores domestically and estimates it could make them $500,000 profits annually by 2023. Wave Prism also plans to be part of Barista championships, online coffee communities, Café Show Expos and explore the international market with entry in the USA and Australia.
Wave Prism launched its prototype in 2019, and upgraded it in 2021. The startup wants to test the local waters with Barista opinions and market reaction in 2021, and plans to meet coffee chain businesses in the USA and Dubai in 2022. Wave Prism is the brainchild of Hyunsoo Benjamin Kim who has rich experience in the global coffee industry. Kim has worked as a Barista, Roaster and won Cup Taster championships as well.
