Wireless charging isn’t a new technology; in fact, it’s been around since the late 19th century when Nikola Tesla unveiled its magnetic resonant coupling solution. The process gave electricity the ability to pass through a magnetic field created by a transmitter, receiver, and two circuits. But for nearly a century, there have been few developments in wireless charging technology except for the introduction of electric toothbrushes.
Korean startup WARP solution seeks to change this through its WARPS technology, which provides Radio Frequency based power to all kinds of electronic devices at a distance of 6M. Founded in 2016 by CEO Kyung Hak Lee, the startup aims to create a wire-free future and make charging convenient.
Radio Frequency technology
WARP Solution’s Radio Frequency technology provides power to all electrical devices at a distance of 6M. Now common wireless charging such as the Qi standard requires a charging pad and a close distance between the electronic device and its charger. WARP’S RF technology provides long-distance charging at more than eight times the reach of our regular wireless charging devices, making it a game-changer in small and large appliances, IoT, and 5G Networks.
Their technology is made up of a Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifier Package and Module composed of transmitters, enabling it to send power over long distances more efficiently. The module allows the sender to track one or more charging devices as they move about to send power at the same time continuously. In RF charging, the device’s movement is flexible, and the chargers don’t have to adhere to specific voltages, which means in the future, RF-charging speed will increase from its current 3 hours, which is the same with Qi baseline chargers.
Smart wireless charger for smart devices
WARPS technology can be customized and embedded into a number of different applications including for home, industry, mobile devices, games, electric vehicles and medical devices. Using the technology, WARPS has developed world’s first portable wireless charger for smart wearable devices – bi:on. The portable wireless charging pad for all wearable/hearable devices can conveniently charge all your smart devices such as Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch and Airpods.
Just plug it into your laptop, power bank or smartphone and charge the devices. It is lightweight & very convenient to take everywhere, during travel, business trip, daily working. An ideal charger with built-in short circuit, over-voltage protection which provides a safe environment for both device and the charger and comes with 12-month warranty. WASPS second commercial product in the market is stand:on – a smart wired charging stand, which is small in size and convenient to use to charge smartphones.
Achievements
WARP solution is quickly placing itself at the forefront of wireless technology with 13 patents transferred from the CISS and securing two more patents for its products. The startup has established an R&D lab in Seoul to develop more cutting edge charging alternatives and is partnering with other firms in its Smart Factory project.
KISTEP selected the firm’s MIMO Antenna as one of 10 promising future technologies in 2018. In 2019, WARP was chosen as the best executive from SISATODAY and was awarded the Korea Technology Innovation grand prize by Money Today for its wireless technology. Last year, the Ministry of trade, industry, and energy acknowledged its Smart Pad mini as a cutting edge technology, and the firm was designated as an ICT regulatory sandbox.
Untapped potential
RF charging holds a lot of promise as the future charging method, especially once the company starts integrating it into devices and standardizing the product. The product will solve the perennial problem of battery life by enabling users to charge their smartphones from anywhere at any time.
Wireless charging will also lead to phone production innovations as it will make it easier to make waterproof devices. Electronic devices that incorporate RF charging will have no point of contact with wires. The conversion of RF into electricity can occur inside the device’s chassis making the whole charging process safer even when the devices are near water. RF charging devices are expected to reduce wiring for television sets and counter lighting by providing wireless power at home.
