GoQba technology is a Korean startup wielding artificial intelligence (AI) for the early detection of dementia. Globally around 50 million people have dementia, an umbrella term used for several neurocognitive disorders that adversely affect various cognitive functions and behavior.
Expert in the field says the onset of dementia, which primarily impacts a person’s ability to remember, can trigger at any age. Still, data suggest that it mainly affects the aged and elderly population. With increased life expectancy and a rise of the geriatric population, around 10 million new cases of dementia are added every year.
However, scientific studies have concluded that early detection and treatment initiation can delay the progression of dementia and improve the quality of life of these patients. It is here that GoQba technology fits in with its technology of mixed reality-based digital therapeutics for early detection of dementia.
Early detection of dementia is an uphill task at present due to more than one reason. First of all, the costs of the current diagnostic are too high, and most dementia patients are from middle- and the lower-income group as per global data. In addition, a dementia patient requires frequent testing, which is a lifelong process.
Founded in 2017, GoQba was formed from a cooperation with the Korea National University Medical Center Neurological Research Team. The company works in AI that uses convolutional networks and deep learning to effectively create insights, predictions, and usable data from (comparatively) low-resolution video data.
Soon after its inception, GoQba developed a prototype algorithm for fast, high accuracy object detection using cutting-edge deep learning AI. The company was part of Google’s Developer Launchpad and have presented their technology at major exhibitions such as Web Summit and Techcrunch Disrupt.
Currently, the startup is focused on solving gaze-point tracking to identify neurological problems early and automating the task of converting handwritten text to data via cutting-edge optical character recognition (OCR) and intelligent character recognition (ICR AI).
