The used car market, a vital component of the automobile industry, is often plagued by information asymmetry, leaving buyers vulnerable to hidden issues in their vehicle purchases. In response to this challenge, Korean startup CarCare introduces Mexpert, a Concierge Pre-Purchase Inspection platform, aiming to revolutionize the used car market by simplifying the car-buying process and providing essential associated services.
The used car market ranks among the top three “lemon markets” in North America, characterized by a substantial information gap between dealers and buyers. In 2022, the total used car sales units in the United States and Canada reached a staggering 41 million, highlighting the immense scale of this industry.
Despite the enormity of the market, only about 8% of used car buyers consider a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) when making their purchase. This oversight can have serious consequences, as it can lead to unsuspecting buyers purchasing vehicles with hidden defects.
One concerning practice in the used car market is “Title Washing,” wherein a car’s previous history is intentionally concealed, making it appear cleaner and more reliable than it actually is. Both the United States Government Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Carfax Canada highly recommend PPIs to uncover such issues and provide peace of mind to buyers.
CarCare’s Mexpert platform offers a comprehensive solution to this issue, striving to bridge the information gap and empower buyers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. Mexpert operates as a concierge Pre-Purchase Inspection service platform, with the primary goal of reducing information asymmetry for used car buyers. The service process is straightforward:
- Reserve a Mechanic: Buyers can reserve one of Mexpert’s partner mechanics.
- Concierge PPI Service: Mexpert coordinates the Pre-Purchase Inspection. Mexpert offers two inspection options: Garage Inspection, where the vehicle is inspected at a mechanic’s shop, and Mobile Inspection, where an auto mechanic comes to your chosen location to inspect the vehicle.
- Notify Inspection Reports: Buyers receive detailed inspection reports, providing valuable insights into the vehicle’s condition.
Currently, Mexpert boasts 31 partner mechanics, with a track record of successfully conducting 13 inspection services in just three weeks during its customer validation phase.
Car Care’s innovative business model aims to ensure the integrity of the used car market. They charge a 10% service fee per transaction for car purchasers, ensuring that buyers have access to reliable and thorough inspections.
Additionally, CarCare earns a 4% commission for each transaction, further incentivizing the promotion of transparency in the market. In a market where the average used car price is $33,500, clients spend an average of $340 on inspections. This relatively small investment can save buyers substantial repair costs and provide them with the confidence to make well-informed decisions.
