Korean startup Alsemy’s AI-based modelling software bringing change to semiconductor development

As global competition in the semiconductor field gets fiercer, Korea’s most important industry is getting innovative solutions from startups using deep learning to improve semiconductor design efficiency. Korean startup Alsemy wants to bring in a paradigm shift in the global semiconductor industry with its Artificial Intelligence (AI) based device modelling. The startup has been developing AI-based semiconductor device modeling EDA software, allowing fast and accurate modeling of devices by non-expert users.

Software to help reduce time & cost

The conventional analytical models take years of development by semiconductor experts and yet could include only the known physical phenomena. AI-based models are automatically generated from data, dramatically reducing the time for model development while including all the physical phenomena involved.

Alsemy uses AI technology to create more accurate device models in less time. Using a model that AI uses a large amount of device analysis data to express an arbitrary function makes it possible to shorten the model development time and increase the accuracy of the model. For, eg., when a new transistor is fabricated, an accurate device model can be passed on to chip designers in a short time. This means a dramatically reduced time from device technology development to chip fabrication, with better prediction of hardware characteristics.

To sell to manufacturers, companies & research institutes

Alsemy aims to help equipment manufacturers reduce time and cost through its AI-based model software. The company’s first software is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2021. Alsemy’s business model is to sell to semiconductor companies or research institutes for a subscription fee. It is a platform where customers can create and simulate AI models using their data.

Alsemy was founded through SK Hynix’s in-house venture in 2019. The startup attracted seed investment in 2020 and is currently in the process of Series A investment. Alsemy’s team consists of experts in AI and semiconductor industry lead by CEO Hyun-bo Cho, who has worked with SK Hynix since 2011. “Efficient design is a key indicator that greatly shortens the development period of semiconductor chips,” said CEO Cho.

Korea is a semiconductor powerhouse that occupies 70% of the global DRAM market, semiconductor design automation (EDA) software is entirely imported from abroad. In a situation where independent technology development is urgently needed, Alsemy plans to grow into a representative EDA company through AI convergence technology.
